Jurek Hakenberg, known by many of us as simply “Haki”, is a graduate of the College of Physical Education in Katowice. He treats sport not only as part of a healthy lifestyle and interesting pastime but also as an opportunity to form Christian character. From early on as a P.E. teacher he tried to organise interesting sports lessons for his students. He opened up a number of schools instructing in horse-riding, self-defence, swimming and aerobics. He organized sports and recreational meetings for whole families. Since 1990 he has been an organiser and animator of interesting sports camps for young children and teenagers. In 2002 together with his wife Lucyna they undertook the challenge of working in the Christian organization Campus Crusade for Christ known in Poland under the name of Ruch Nowe Życie. On the basis of this experience they created SportPlus (http://www.sport-plus.pl). Its goal is to bring together an attractive sports programme and learning through experience. The Plus in the name stands for dance and artistic workshops aimed at helping to form the character of young people based on Christian values (amongst others the prevention of addiction and aggression as well as building proper relationships between each other). The work of SportPlus engages not only Jurek’s whole family, but also graduates of various tertiary schools, with sports colleges in the lead. Despite working in different companies and institutions, the members of this group gladly give up their holidays to organise summer and winter camps for children and teenagers. They always provide an array of sports attractions, experienced staff, good cuisine, and a holiday in attractive locations.
