"...the older women [should] be reverent in the way they live...Then they can train the younger women..." – Titus 2:3-5
On the pages of the Bible we can read about many extraordinary women, who played a significant role in their environments. In the Book of Judges we meet the courageous prophetess Deborah, who passed judgment on Israel and helped Barak conquer the Canaanites. In the Book of Esther – we get to know a beautiful queen of Jewish descent, who helped rescue her nation from intended slaughter. We also learn of great mothers: Sarah, Rebecca, Lea, Rachel or Anna whose children were the children of promise who grew up to become great men of God.
In the New Testament too, we find women who marked their presence in Jesus’ ministry. They accompanied Him, listened to His teachings and served Him. We meet the Syrophenician woman – a mother determined in the fight for her child. We read about a woman who, despite the protests of the apostles, anointed the feet of Jesus with a costly oil, thus foretelling His imminent death. We can follow the example of the woman who suffered from haemorrhage. Thanks to her faith and persistency in attaining her goal, she could finally experience healing. Jesus valued also the faith and involvement of women in proclaiming the Gospel. The first of these was the Samaritan woman, the second Mary Magdalene, whom Jesus met by the empty tomb and sent forth to the disciples with the good News. The women’s ministry was also continued during the time of the first Church. Women remained in prayer together with the men and preached the Gospel. Phoebe was a deaconess in her church and Paul called Priscilla, Mary, Tryphena, Tryphosa and Persis his fellow-workers in the Lord. Women were active in giving practical help as well as providing living testimony as to how Jesus can change sinners.
