Prayer

"And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it. If you love me, you will obey what I command." – John 14:13-15

Prayer has always brought upon people God’s favour and blessing. We can easily find passages in the Scriptures, both in the Old and the New Testament, encouraging us to pray and intercede for others. God saved Lot and his family on Abraham’s request. It is thanks to the prayers of Moses that the Israelites conquered their enemies, and were provided with water and food in the desert. Elijah, due to his persistent prayer brought rain onto the earth after a three and a half year period of draught. Many years later, Darius – the king of the Mediates and Persians, witnessing the relentlessness of Daniel, his ceaseless and faithful prayer to God despite prohibition, acknowledged the greatness of the God of Israel. We know of the prayers of major and minor prophets, as well as of kings, such as David and Solomon. In the New Testament, we find that Jesus prayed to His Father and then performed miracles: He multiplied food, brought Lazarus back to life, and healed the sick. He left us with “The Lord’s Prayer” as a guideline on how to pray; it is widely known and recited. We also know of Jesus’ disciples’ prayers to be found in their epistles. They can serve as a source of inspiration for our prayers, and their content can help build up our faith.

We want to “stand in the gap…”. Prayer is a believer’s privilege, a conversation with the Father, but also a task to be carried out. By praying, we glorify God, we ask for His will to be done, we solicit for the healing of illnesses and emotional wounds, we protect ourselves and others from temptations, downfalls or wrong choices. Prayer brings about changes in spiritual reality, even though our eyes might not see them yet.
