"Sing to the LORD a new song, His praise in the assembly of the saints." – Psalm 149:1
People always have someone or something that they admire, take care of and love. This is partly so because of the way that we have been created. That is why music has always been a part of worshiping God. It has been an expression of gratitude and love for the goodness and grace that He bestowed on us and has been helping manifest our adoration for our Creator, Liberator and Lord of glory.
In the Scriptures we find many examples of songs and psalms. They were sung corporately by the Hebrew people as well as by individuals (we know of the songs of Moses, David, Miriam, Deborah or Mary, the mother of Jesus). In the Book of Psalms we also come across hymns by Asaph and Korah. Their subject matter is varied: from hymns praising God, songs full of thanksgiving, to lamentations and liturgical hymns. King David, who himself often sang and played for God, established the ‘praise and worship ministry’. He commanded the Levites to pick out amongst themselves a group of singers who, accompanied by the harps, lutes and cymbals, were to sing loudly and joyously to the Lord.
Since the very beginning, Christians have praised God with songs and prayers. The apostle Paul encourages believers to pass on in this way the “Word of Christ”, to teach and admonish one another using psalms, hymns, spiritual songs, gratefully singing to God.
It is also our desire to give glory to our Creator and Saviour. That is why we try to incorporate worshiping God into our lifestyle. Yet it is not a desire that originates in us, it is inspired by God alone through His Spirit and Word which prompt us to give praise to Him and His works that we can witness in our life.
We gather at our services to give God praise and glory with our songs and individual prayers. During worship we get the chance to experience purification, confession of sins and of pouring our hearts out before the Lord. It is led by people willing to make use of their musical talents for the service of God and other people.
