Benevolence

"Do not withhold good from those who deserve it, when it is in your power to act." – Proverbs 3:27

In the Old Testament there were laws protecting people with the lowest social status. This was supposed to remind everyone that Israel was also once enslaved in the land of Egypt. Therefore, one had to leave part of the harvest on the fields, in orchards and in vineyards so that the orphan, widow or foreigner could gather the leftover ears of grain, olives and grapes. Every three years the tithe was set aside for “charity” so that every Levite, widow, orphan and foreigner could come and eat of the remains to their heart’s content. Every seven years people were commended to write off the debts of their neighbours and brothers – this command did not apply to foreign creditors. Once every fifty years there came a jubilee year during which every impoverished Israelite who had lost his house in the last few years or so had the right to return to it together with his family. If, as a result of his debts he had become a slave, he regained his freedom in the jubilee year.

Jesus was also sensitive to the needs of others. He taught about the necessity for caring for neighbours as a manifestation of a changed life. On seeing a crowd of people who had followed Him to a remote place and who felt a spiritual hunger for His Word, as well as a physical hunger, He first fed them with His Word and then told His disciples to give the people something to eat. Fortunately, He didn’t leave them on their own with the task at hand. Thousands of people witnessed a miracle: everyone had eaten and still lots of leftovers remained. This situation took place two times and we can read about it in all of the Gospels. We experience the same miracle whenever we are open to support those in need.

Therefore, if you see anyone in a difficult situation and need support in helping them out or you have the means to help but don’t know who might be in need of it, please contact us.
